Students are often entered for graded examinations following discussion with their teacher; Parmiter’s is a centre for ABRSM examinations and those set by other boards can be taken externally by arrangement with their teacher.
The closing day for applications for the Autumn term is Friday 14 June 2024 and further information about individual instrumental tuition, along with the application form can be found on the Parmiters School website here.
Extra-Curricular Music
Music has a prominent role in school life at Parmiter’s. We recognise that all young people are impacted by music, both individually or collectively, and their experience is always personal and significant. We are very proud of the many wide-ranging and exciting musical opportunities available to our students and all students are strongly encouraged to join music groups that are appropriate to them. They find it helps to increase their individual confidence and adds significantly to their personal development and enjoyment of playing.
There are many varied music groups open to new Year 7 students, tailored for specific levels of experience and/or ability. These mostly involve attendance at lunchtime rehearsals and all contribute to school music, with performances throughout the year as part of the annual school music calendar. The most popular ones are listed here:
- Orchestra (string players grade 4+, woodwind/brass by invitation)
- String Ensemble (grade 2+)
- Jazz Workshop (all woodwind, brass or orchestral string instruments grade 3+)
- Friday Band (woodwind, brass and percussion grade 2+)
- First Band (beginners - all instruments!)
There may also be opportunities to join smaller groups such as the Saxophone Ensemble, a Guitar Club, Percussion Ensemble, Flute Choir, Brass Ensemble, Recorder Group, Clarinet or Double Reed Ensemble - notices for these will be displayed in the Music Department in September.
If you would like more information about these groups, please contact Mr Bates, Director of Music, by e-mailing s.bates@parmiters.herts.sch.uk, or students can come and see a member of the music staff at the start of term.
Trips and Visits
Parmiter's School recognises the need to provide a rich and inspiring learning environment to maximise students' learning potential. As such, we recognise the value of trips and visits to engage students in any given subject or enhance their understanding of the world around them.
Day or overnight trips will be advertised in advance and parental consent will be requested before each trip. Additionally, from time to time, students will be given the opportunity to participate in local excursions for routine sporting fixtures, environmental studies, etc.
A list of trips that will be running for the academic year can be found under 'Parmiter's Life - Beyond the Curriculum' or click here.
Student Leadership
At Parmiter’s, we give early opportunities for students to develop leadership skills which set a foundation for future success. Students who actively take initiative and lead projects will build confidence which is crucial for navigating challenges and opportunities later in life. Early leadership opportunities help students discover their natural strengths and talents, allowing them to pursue areas where they can truly excel.
Form Captains
Form Captains enjoy the opportunity to talk to teachers, classmates and maybe even the Headmaster! This leadership role will develop communication skills and build confidence. Form Captains get to know classmates better and work with the Form Tutor to build a strong sense of community within the form group.
Student Voice
Student representatives on the Student Voice committees act as a bridge between the student body and the senior leaders. They gather feedback from classmates to understand their concerns, needs and ideas for improvement. Joining a committee provides a platform for students to have their voices heard on important issues affecting the school environment, curriculum or activities.
House Captains
Representing your House in school can be a rewarding experience. Representing one of our six Houses allows our students to feel a sense of belonging and pride in being part of a team and the opportunity to promote healthy competition within the school community.
Year 7 Ambassadors
Success within the programme recognises the student as an exemplary role model of school values and ambassadors are expected to continue to uphold and promote the values in every aspect of school life, setting a gold-standard for their peers. Ambassadors provide encouragement and motivation to peers who may not be aware of the range of possibilities open to them or how to make the most of them.
